Tai Chi Definition & History Tai Chi Chuan (also written as Taijiquan) is an ancient Chinese form of exercise originally created as a fighting art. Tai Chi was accredited to a Taoist Monk named Zhang San Feng as its creator. Its origins date back over 700 years, some say even up to 1500 years.

The origin of the word “Wu-tang” derives from Wu Dang, the Taoist holy mountain located in the Central China in the Hubei Province. The word also is the name of the Emperor Yong Le’s Ming Purple Imperial City, which was constructed during the time period of 1404-1420.

Whereas Shaolin includes many martial art styles, Wudangquan includes only a few arts that use the focused mind to control the waist, and therefore the body.

Hou Fengqi ( simplified Chinese: 侯凤岐; traditional Chinese: 侯鳳岐; pinyin: Hòu Fèngqí; born March 1962) is a former Chinese politician who spent most of his career in the cities of Bayannur and Wuhai, in north China ‘s Inner Mongolia. He was investigated by the Communist Party of China ‘s anti-graft agency in November 2015.

Zhang made her acting debut in the television film Touching Starlight at the age of 16. In 1998, while she was studying in Central Academy of Drama, Zhang was offered her first role by director Zhang Yimou in his film The Road Home, which won the Silver Bear prize at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival.

Here is one of the stories of how Zhang Sanfeng discovered Taijiquan. “… one day he spotted a snake and a crane in deadly combat. Chang [Zhang Sanfeng] noticed before the snake attacked, it would raise its head, bow its body, and appear to gather its intrinsic energy, ready to strike out like an arrow.

Zhang rose to international fame in 2000 with her role as Yu Jiaolong in Ang Lee ‘s re-visioned martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie’s success in the US and Europe helped her break into Hollywood.
