Good Book. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cinceros, is a book for the crowd of ages 14+. I personally think it’s a good book, the overall message to it can definitely be relatable to many readers. The novel covers the life of Esperanza, a chicana who is 12.

The House on Mango Street is a 1984 novel by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros. Structured as a series of vignettes, it tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago.

The crossing of the river expressed here supplies images of the Chicana experience of crossing back and forth over the Rio Grande, not only literally but in the sense of identity and culture. Through water imagery, Cisneros passionately emphasizes the pain, the emotion, and the struggle of Chicanas.

The creek is an important character through the course of this story. For one thing, Woman Hollering Creek represents the borders for Cleofilas. On one side of the creek is her childhood home; on the other side is the new life which turned out to be nothing like she thought it would be.

Esperanza’s love for her friend Sally translates into a violent need to protect Sally from the outside world, and in this way Esperanza resembles Sally’s father and Sally’s husband. Esperanza wants to keep the boys away from Sally, just as the men do. However, unlike them, Esperanza saves her violence for the boys.

When they were younger Esperanza was often jealous of the bond between Miguel and her Papa, though she also harbored a crush on the boy and once even declared her intention to marry him.

Are you going to write a sequel to Esperanza Rising? I wrote the story with the intention that it would be a book in its entirety — that it would be a complete story. Right now, due to my other writing commitments, I have no immediate plans to write a sequel.

Esperanza asks what the doctor meant when he said that mama was depressed, and Hortensia explains that Mama has lost a lot of things in just a few months—the strain on her body and her heart have made her feel “helpless.”

In the beginning of the book, Esperanza was a spoiled, ungrateful girl. She did not appreciate the things she had until she lost it all. “… because she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

In the United States, the story takes place on and around a farm in Arvin, California. Esperanza, her mother, and their friends live in tiny shacks that she thinks look more like horse stalls than houses.

Esperanza saw brown barren mountains, golden hills, and canyons. She tries to find her own connection to the land by listening for the hearbeat. “She stretched our on her stomach” (p. 91).
