Fittingly, then, Wednesday night’s “The Life & Songs of Kris Kristofferson” tribute concert in Nashville featured a reconstituted Highwaymen, with guest of honor Kristofferson and Nelson — the two surviving Highwaymen — joined by Shooter Jennings and Jamey Johnson.

The latest of many films to tackle the story is The Highwaymen. It is the true story of Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, two Texas Rangers who hunted down and killed the duo.

Kristofferson came from a long line of veterans. He was under pressure from his family to follow in their footsteps, so he joined the Army. He completed Ranger School and was stationed in Germany in the early 1960s. His family disowned him and they sadly never reconciled.

A highwayman was a type of robber who attacked people who were travelling. Some highwaymen robbed alone but others worked in gangs. They often targeted coaches because they did not have much defence, stealing money, jewellery and other valuable items. The penalty for robbery with violence was to be executed by hanging.

Most highwaymen were eventually caught and hanged. Afterwards their body was sometimes hanged on a frame called a gibbet as a warning to others. However from the end of the 18th century policing of the highways greatly improved and by the 1830s the age of the highwayman was over.

Betrayed to the authorities by Tim, a jealous ostler, the highwayman escapes ambush when Bess sacrifices her life to warn him. Learning of her death, he dies in a futile attempt at revenge, shot down on the highway. In the final stanza, the ghosts of the lovers meet again on winter nights.

Highwaymen had an average life expectancy of 28, most died by hanging and then their bodies were hung in gibbets at crossroads as a warning to law breakers.

A highwayman was a robber who stole from travellers. This type of thief usually travelled and robbed by horse as compared to a footpad who travelled and robbed on foot; mounted highwaymen were widely considered to be socially superior to footpads. Such criminals operated until the mid or late 19th century.

Etymology: In the 16th century during the times of famous William Shakespeare, it was customary that the travelers on roads were not quite safe from the robbers on highway who took lots of money from these travelers.

Robbery is almost always a felony, punishable by at least one year in prison, regardless of the value of the items taken. Most states punish aggravated robbery quite harshly, including armed robbery, carjacking, and home invasion robbery. Sentences of ten or 20 years in prison or more are common.

Elements of Robbery The crime of robbery involves (1) the taking of the property of another (2) from his or her person or in their presence (3) by violence, intimidation or threat (4) with the intent to deprive them of it permanently. Robbery is thus distinct from the crime of larceny in two important ways.

Persons found guilty of this offense shall be punished by prision mayor in its medium period to reclusion temporal in its minimum period if the act or acts committed by them are not punishable by higher penalties, in which case, they shall suffer such high penalties.
