The Southern States are composed of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas, Maryland and Florida.

West Virginia was born out of sectional differences during the Civil War. The schism that split the United States in two during the Civil War did the same to Virginia. Although Virginia joined the Confederacy in April 1861, the western part of the state remained loyal to the Union and began the process of separation.

One reason there is no East Virginia is that the government of Virginia during the Civil War did not really accept West Virginia as a legitimate state. And it is the part that was not as “central” as Richmond and all the “virginia plain that goes to the sea” that still be in Virginia actually.

Western Virginia’s slave population peaked in 1850 with 20,428 slaves, or nearly 7% of the population. In 1860 the number of slaves was 18,371. Much of the decreased number of slaves in West Virginia was due to the high demand for slaves in the lower South.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia consists of two counties (Accomack and Northampton) on the Atlantic coast detached from the mainland of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States.
