It is not the only planet to have rings—made of chunks of ice and rock—but none are as spectacular or as complicated as Saturn’s. Like fellow gas giant Jupiter, Saturn is a massive ball made mostly of hydrogen and helium.

While the red planet’s thin atmosphere and bitter cold temperatures keep these frozen clouds from ever falling in the form of rain and snow we see here on Earth, there is actually a type of precipitation on Mars. “This precipitation most likely takes the form of frost,” NASA explains.

Today, Mars has a high temperature of minus 14 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of minus 117. The weather data comes from the Mars rover Curiosity, which has been on the Red Planet for 458 sols.

At the landing sites, an expected daytime high on the ground might be around 22° Celsius (71° Fahrenheit). An expected nighttime lows might be -99° Celsius (-146° Fahrenheit). Atmospheric temperatures, by contrast, can vary up to 83° Celsius (181° Fahrenheit).

Heating systems that use solar energy would make the most sense. The tank would act as a large heat energy storage device that would stay warm during the Martian night. The liquid from the tank could then be piped into shelters to heat them. Similar systems might also be used to melt ice, mined below the surface.

However, the surface is not hospitable to humans or most known life forms due to the radiation, greatly reduced air pressure, and an atmosphere with only 0.16% oxygen. Human survival on Mars would require living in artificial Mars habitats with complex life-support systems.
