Apprentices. Tenebrae—known to the Old Sith Empire as Darth Vitiate, his reconstituted Sith Empire as the Sith Emperor, and his Eternal Empire as Valkorion—was an ancient dark side entity of enormous power who manipulated galactic affairs for 1,500 years.

Thexan was the son of Emperor Valkorion of the Eternal Empire and Senya Tirall, one of the Knights of Zakuul. He and his twin brother Arcann were trained from childhood to be warriors, with Thexan always being there in harsh times.

In 3637 BBY, the body of Valkorion finally died in a battle between Vitiate, Arcann, and the figure later known as the Commander.

The Sith, also referred to as the Sith Order was a sect of Force-sensitives who utilized the dark side of the Force. The term “Sith” originally referred to a species of aliens native to the planets Korriban and Ziost, who were later enslaved and ruled by exiled Dark Jedi from the Galactic Republic.

George Lucas originally intended for Sifo-Dyas to be an alias for Darth Sidious, but he changed plans while working on the script of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Instead, Lucas decided Sifo-Dyas was a patsy, who conveniently served Palpatine’s purpose.

Training Qui-Gon. Dooku was the Jedi Master of Qui-Gon Jinn, who eventually achieved the same rank in the Jedi Order. Dooku in 68 BBY would take a 12 year-old Qui-Gon Jinn as his second Padawan after Rael Aveross.

It’s been confirmed in Star Wars canon that Qui-Gon Jinn would never have left the Jedi Order to join Count Dooku. He’s definitely not the most rule-abiding Jedi; in The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi cautioned Qui-Gon that he would have been sitting on the Jedi Council if he’d just follow the Jedi Code.

When Qui-Gon was killed by Darth Maul, Dooku was so saddened that Qui-Gon’s death lead to Dooku’s transformation into the Sith Lord Darth Tyranus. He would later provoke the memory against Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jinn’s apprentice.

Maul had been dominating the duel since the beginning. When the fight moved to a narrow arena and with Obi-Wan left in separated room, Qui-Gon was in great disadvantage. At 193cm, he suffered the lack of space to execute his form of choice. This led to his demise.

Now for the question posted, my answer is yes. Qui-Gon realized during the fight how stong Maul was and how the Zabrak was controlling the entire tempo of the fight. If you read Episode 1 the book, it explains Qui-Gon’s emotions and realization that Maul is superior in Lightsaber dueling.
