K. C. Wolf is the official mascot of the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. K. C. Wolf was named after the team’s “Wolfpack,” a group of boisterous fans who sat in temporary bleachers at Municipal Stadium.

#2 – Kansas City Wolves KC Wolf is infamous not only as the mascot for the Kansas City football team, but also as a prominent figure in the Kansas City community. KC Wolf puts in appearances all across the city and serves as entertainment, a motivational speaker and of course, an ambassador for the team.

In 1963, the team picked the “Chiefs” name to honor former mayor Harold Bartle, whose nickname was “The Chief” and was instrumental to bringing the team from Dallas to Kansas City.

Despite Native American and national news media statements that they find the practices to be racist, the Chiefs continue many of the behaviors of other teams with Native American names, including fans wearing headdresses and warpaint, doing the tomahawk chop, and banging a drum.

Arrowhead houses roughly 80,000 loyalists and plays host to countless traditions. However, Kansas City hasn’t notched a playoff victory since 1993—cynicism is etched in the DNA of Chiefs fans.

While the team has no plans to change the name, other changes could be in store. Chiefs fans have been doing the “tomahawk chop” at Arrowhead Stadium for years, but now could be the time for the team to put a stop to it.

Hunt wanted to find a city to which he could commute easily from Dallas, and when he was unable to secure Tulane Stadium because the university didn’t want its football program to compete with a pro team, he turned to Kansas City, Missouri, where Mayor H. Roe Bartle persuaded him to move to the Midwest.

Usage of the tomahawk chop has led to complaints that it made fun of Native American culture. It also was criticized for being a reference to the former practice of scalping. Shortly after the Atlanta Braves adopted it, there were a number of calls from Native Americans for Braves fans to stop doing the tomahawk chop.

Chiefs fans have relished doing the tomahawk chop since the early 1990s. But to many Native Americans and others, the gesture is an offensive mockery of the nation’s first people. Yet it persists as efforts have been made to get such stereotypes out of sports.

In a June 8, 2000, guest editorial in the Tallahassee Democrat, Bill Durham wrote that “many Seminoles painted themselves, were great warriors and did indeed use tomahawks, guns, knives, sharpened spears and any other weapons that were available to them. They rode horses for hunting and war.

The Kansas City Chiefs first heard it when the Northwest Missouri State band, directed by 1969 FSU graduate Al Sergel, performed the chant while the players were warming up for a game against San Diego.

Carolyn King, the Braves organist, had played the “tomahawk song” during most at bats for a few seasons, but it finally caught on with Braves fans when the team started winning. The usage of foam tomahawks led to criticism from Native American groups that it was “demeaning” to them and called for them to be banned.

Student Doug Alley wrote the lyrics to the fight song and Thomas Wright, Professor of Music, composed the score. Mr. Wright owns the rights to the song and allows FSU to use the Fight Song every year in exchange for 2 season tickets.
