Where should we stay? If your choice is between Rapid City and Deadwood, definitely choose Rapid City. Deadwood is mostly known these days for the casinos—not a particularly good choice for a family with teens.

Amenities such as restaurants will be closed for the season in Keystone and Custer and you run a risk of being snowed in if you stay in those places as well. If you are traveling in late November, Rapid City is the safest choice.

Worth it enough that I decided to live there and work in living history for the town. Of course it’s a bit touristy, but the whole town is a national historic landmark so the tourists it brings are the people that like history. There is plenty to see and do while in Deadwood.
