In the 19th century a big chunk of the most well-known literature was written by men, for men. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is no exception. Barely any female characters feature in the story, and those that do don’t have agency.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1968 Canadian-American TV film based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was directed by Charles Jarrott, produced by Dan Curtis, and written by Ian McLellan Hunter.

The horror that Jekyll experiences is made evident here in the response of Enfield and Utterson, too shocked by the change they have seen in his face even to speak until they have gone some distance away. This is the last time that Utterson will see Jekyll.

Utterson’s secretary, who is “a great student and critic of handwriting.” He finds something amazingly similar between Dr. Jekyll’s and Mr. Hyde’s handwriting.

Nearly a year passes, and a gentleman named Sir Danvers Carew is brutally murdered. A maid looking out of a window witnesses the crime and describes how she saw Carew beaten to death by a man that she recognises as Mr Hyde. Dr Jekyll becomes very ill and isolated.

Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield see Jekyll at his window when on their daily walk a second time, but in the middle of their conversation, Jekyll gets a look of horror on his face and violently shuts the window and leaves them standing there left in shock.
