In addition to its development as a hunting rifle, the Model 700 also provided the basis for military and police sniper rifles, starting with the M40 rifle in 1966, which was initially ordered by the United States Marine Corps. The US Army adopted the M24 Sniper Weapon System in 1986.

Accuracy: Like all Remington 700s, the 700 SPS Tactical hits its target flawlessly. With standard Federal blue box 150gr ammo, I was able to maintain a 1″ three shot group at 100 yards. Upgrading to Silvertips, the groups shortened to just under 0.75″ .

That’s why I opted to convert the BDL-style Remington 700 SPS Tactical to accept a detachable, common-pattern magazine designed by a company that makes such things. Suffice it to say that these single-stack, short-action magazines are available from Magpul, and you can (and should) buy them there.

Heavy barrel versions with laminated stocks like the Model 700 SPS varmint are available for varmint hunting. The Model 700 ADL was replaced as the most economical Model 700 by the Model 700 SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic) in newer production.

M40 rifle
The M40 rifle is a bolt-action sniper rifle used by the United States Marine Corps. It has had four variants: the M40, M40A1, M40A3, and M40A5.

The difference from a short-action to a long-action in overall length in your firearm is roughly ½”. In theory, a short-action is faster to reload because of the shorter travel when working the bolt. This is only marginally faster though; we are talking tenths of a second.

Registered. On a Model 700, measure between the screw holes on the bottom of the rifle. Long action is 7 3/8″…. short action is 6 1/2″.

Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical Rifle -The Model 700 SPS Tactical is a highly maneuverable member of the family. The firearms side of Remington is now officially known as RemArms. Back in May of this year, there were reports that Remington was gearing up to reopen its Ilion plant. RemArms hired back 230 workers, with plans for starting production with the Model 870 shotgun line.

The 700 SPS Varmint is available in five different calibers; 204 Ruger, 223 Remington, 22-250, 243 Winchester and 308 Winchester. For a slight premium, the rifle can also be ordered with a left handed action. The 700 SPS has a 26″ Remington Varmint contour barrel.

On the SPS Varmint, Remington uses a fairly light synthetic stock that DOES NOT free float the barrel. On this rifle, the front of the stock contacts the barrel. I suspected this could possibly interfere with accuracy, however, you’ll see this was not the case.

In the ever changing hierarchy of Remington 700 models, the SPS is one model up from the bottom, the ADL which has a blind magazine (and is the least expensive version).

The X-Mark Pro trigger was set at 5 pounds 9.5 ounces (average of five pulls) from the factory. Remington allows the user to adjust the trigger pull weight. The lowest weight I was able to adjust the trigger too was a stout 5 pounds.
