The square is the home to many monuments, including a Holocaust memorial, an obelisk dedicated to Wade Hampton, and a statue of John C. Calhoun in cast bronze atop a giant pillar. The Calhoun monument is the second such structure in the square.

We met with our Board of Directors to assess the current state of public health and review the plans and outlined safety protocols for this year’s show. After extensive evaluation and deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

Calhoun died of tuberculosis at the Old Brick Capitol boarding house in Washington D.C. Calhoun’s death, white Charlestonians wanted to dedicate a monument in his honor. As of June 2020, the monument no longer stands. It was taken down in a unanimous vote by Charleston city council.
Q. Who owns Marion Square in Charleston SC?
The square is jointly owned by the Washington Light Infantry and the Sumter Guards. Their objections prevented city officials from paving the park as a parking lot in the 1940s and in 1956 and also prevented its development as a shopping center. It is operated as a public park under a lease by the city of Charleston.

On July 10, the city removed the Lewis & Clark statue featuring Sacajawea after many people claimed the statue was misrepresenting the famous Native American women. This statue was removed along with two other statues displaying confederate generals.

Capt. Lewis’s dog Seaman took after them, caught one in the river, drowned & killed it and swam to shore with it.” Seaman continued to hunt in this manner until he was severely injured by a beaver in mid-May 1805.
