The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list will range from 12 to 18 months. Our Public Housing Waiting List is currently open for all units. Applications may be picked up at the office between 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday – Thursday.

How long can I stay in the voucher program? Once you have a voucher, you generally have the right to keep it forever, unless you violate the rules of the program OR the housing authority runs out of money for the voucher program.

Section 8 Income Limits in Texas Household income cannot exceed 50% of the HUD median income level for the area. The HUD reported household median income in Harris County (Houston area) is $71,500 for 2017 and in Dallas County (Dallas) it is $73,400.

The individual/household applies for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The applicant is likely placed on a waiting list that may take more than 1-2 years. During this time, the applicant can also choose to accept project-based vouchers.

Who is eligible and how do I apply?

According to the agency, the approval process takes about two weeks for review and may take up to 14 days for payment processing once the applicant has provided all the federally required documentation.

Funds are still available, and we encourage eligible households to apply.

The Texas Rent Relief Program can help renters with past due rent, utility and home energy expenses as far back as March 13, 2020, current expenses and up to two months of expected expenses.

If you cannot get help with rent and need to use the CDC moratorium, you may need to prove that you applied for all help available. You can apply with more than one program. Note that you can only get one rent assistance payment per month.
