Botanists and arborists will usually use stem to refer to a slender portion of the plant, while stalk refers to something more substantial, often the main upright “load-bearing” portion of a plant’s body. A stalk can bear several stems, but a stem cannot bear a stalk.

Stems have four main functions which are: Support for and the elevation of leaves, flowers and fruits. The stems keep the leaves in the light and provide a place for the plant to keep its flowers and fruits. Transport of fluids between the roots and the shoots in the xylem and phloem(see below)

The primary functions of the stem are to support the leaves; to conduct water and minerals to the leaves, where they can be converted into usable products by photosynthesis; and to transport these products from the leaves to other parts of the plant, including the roots.

Types of Plant Stems There are two main types of stems: woody and herbaceous.

There are four types of herbaceous stems. These are climbers, bulbs, tubers and runners.

Stomate, also called stoma, plural stomata or stomas, any of the microscopic openings or pores in the epidermis of leaves and young stems. Stomata are generally more numerous on the underside of leaves.

The stem is divided into two parts; nodes and internodes. Nodes are where buds grow into leaves, stems, or flowers and internodes are the parts of the stem in between the nodes (see Figure 8).
