It was not widely known, but Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach, since its inception, has been a public golf course with a semi-private element to it, the Spyglass Hill Golf Club. The 50-year agreement that began on March 11, 1966, opening day at Spyglass Hill, will end on Thursday.

Several of Spyglass Hill’s inland holes through the Del Monte Forest are better than Pebble Beach’s inland holes framed by mansions and roads. When it comes to difficulty, even pros fear the uphill climbs and elevated greens at Spyglass Hill, one of the toughest courses annually on the PGA Tour.

In my opinion, Spyglass Hill is a much tougher course than Pebble Beach. It is definitely a target rich barkie environment. The wind is not as much of a factor as Pebble, but the fairways are very tight and you can find yourself blocked out if you are on the wrong side of the fairway.

However, it is cart path only and it is very hilly. As a result, the course is in beautiful shape but you need to be also.

It’s probably worth playing Spanish Bay once for the excellent views. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr, Sandy Tatum and Tom Watson. Spanish Bay is not a long course but it is scenic. It is located in a former sand mine and one can see the ocean from just about every hole.

Spyglass Hill, one of the most difficult layouts in the country. measures almost 7,000 yards from the championship tees with a par of 72. The course rating is 75.5 with a slope rating of 147.

Spyglass is one of the courses used for the early rounds of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, so you’ll be playing a PGA Tour course. But the course also offers twilight rates (as many holes as you can play after a certain time). Regular tee-time rates at Spyglass are $395 per round, but twilight rates are $225.

Currently, Spyglass is ranked #10 in America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses as rated by Golf Digest (Pebble is #1). It’s ranked #45 overall among all public and private courses in the states. From the tips, Spyglass measures 6,960 yards with a 75.5 rating and 144 slope.

Our round was about 4-1/2 hours. Marshall was on us all day to the point I wanted to walk off. Give the eighty year old man a break, this was his lifelong dream to golf at this resort. Since everything was wet, I’m from Arizona where everything is hot and dried.

The safest section of the green to hit is the bowl in the middle. The character of Spyglass Hill visibly changes on this tee box, as you’ll spend the rest of your round hiking the Del Monte Forest. Try to take a peek at the pin when you’re in the first fairway. This giant green has three distinct sections that play dramatically different.
