Peridot, spinel and sardonyx are the three birthstones for August. The spinel birthstone was underappreciated until recently, as today’s consumers look for an alternative to ruby, a gem with which red spinel was mistaken for centuries.

In the United States fine topaz has been worked near Pikes Peak, Colorado, and in San Diego county, California. Common topaz occurs in coarse crystals at many localities. For detailed physical properties, see silicate mineral (table).

In contrast, precious topaz (a.k.a. ‘imperial’ topaz) in rich orange colors fetches prices in excess of $1000/ct. for large (10 ct. +) sizes. The most valuable topaz is a rich pink or red color, and can reach $3500/ct.

White (or clear) is the most common color of topaz. The colorless variety generally has the least value, but stones can sell for $80 or more, depending on size and quality.

There are a few easy ways to tell a real topaz apart from quartz. The first characteristic to keep in mind is the hardness factor. An original topaz will scratch glass while quartz will not leave a mark on it. Moreover, a real topaz is also cool to touch and it gets electrified easily.
