The K+ cation has a small positive charge (+1) and a relatively large radius (because it is in the fourth row of the periodic table), so it is a very weak Lewis acid. The NO3− anion is the conjugate base of a strong acid, so it has essentially no basic character (Table 16.1).

Physiologic Role. Potassium ion (K+) is perhaps the most frequently supplemented electrolyte. Potassium plays an important role in cell membrane physiology, especially in maintaining resting membrane potential and in generating action potentials in the nervous system and heart.

Potassium is found extensively as potash (KOH). It is mined in Germany, USA, and elsewhere. Minerals such as sylvite (KCl), carnallite, and langbeinite, are found in ancient lake and sea beds. That as Saskatchewan in Canada contains about 10,000,000,000 tonnes of potassium chloride.

Extract Potassium Metal from Bananas – procedure

Banana peels are good for gardens because they contain 42 percent potassium (abbreviated to its scientific name K), one of the three major components of fertilizer along with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and shown on fertilizer labels as NPK. In fact, banana peels have the highest organic sources of potassium.

Although bananas are a great source of potassium, many other healthy foods — such as sweet potatoes and beets — have more potassium per serving. Some foods such as Swiss chard and white beans even have double the amount of potassium per cup, compared to a medium-sized banana.

Two simple methods to extract potassium (K) from fresh plant tissues for use as possible quick K tests: i) freeze/squeeze in which the tissue is frozen, thawed and extracted by placement in a syringe, and ii) press in which the sap is extracted by crushing fresh leaves in a garlic press, were evaluated.

Typical sources include mined rock powders and wood ash. Of course, manures, compost and other organic materials are potassium sources, too, because even though the concentration of potassium in them is pretty low, typically a lot of material is applied to a field.

The nutrient value of Epsom salts is 0-0-0, meaning they contain no traces at all of nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium. If you do choose to use Epsom salts on your plants, it’s important that you are aware that Epsom salts are not a substitute for fertilizer.

When diluted with water, Epsom salt is easily taken up by plants, especially when applied as a foliar spray. Most plants can be misted with a solution of 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of Epsom salt per gallon of water once a month. For more frequent watering, every other week, cut this back to 1 tablespoon (15 mL).
