The most common way to describe a session of photo taking is with two words—photo shoot. However, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong to write it as one word—photoshoot. In fact, photoshoot has recently been gaining popularity, but it has a long way to go before it catches up with photo shoot.

A Mini Sessions is exactly what it sounds like: a smaller version of the portrait photo packages you already offer as a photographer. For example, if your typical portrait client experience or photo session lasts an hour, this photo session should only last 15 – 20 minutes.

What is another word for photo-shoot?

Basically put, a mini-session is a small version of a full session. Think of it as a small bite of a cake. It gives people the taste of a full session and keeps them wanting more.

This all depends on what you’re shooting. I am primarily a wedding photographer, I aim to give my clients 50-100 images p/hour that I shoot. That would be the edited images, I would give to them. For my portrait sessions, I aim to do 20-30 edited images for a hour session.

In a 30-minute photography session, you could get around 20 photos to choose between, whereas from a 1-hour shoot, you should expect 40-50 pictures to look through.

Since photo shoot is a two-word phrase, just like portrait subject or photo session, you can remember to choose this version of the phrase when referring to a session wherein photographs are being taken. Just as you wouldn’t say “photosession,” you also wouldn’t say “photoshoot.”

Last Saturday, I held Mini Photo Sessions, which I call Petite Portrait sessions (just for a fun and different name). I thought I’d share some tips for how to photograph mini sessions, for the aspiring photographers out there, on this Photo Tip Tuesday.

Your Mini Session info should be clear and shareable. Your marketing graphics, images and photos should incorporate three elements: A simple message. Don’t overload your Instagram graphics with text. Instead, stick with simple copy: Fall Mini Sessions – October 1st! Provide details and LINK IN BIO guidance in your caption for your client to see.

As a photographer, it may be difficult to set a firm boundary, but it’s important that limited time offers such as Mini Sessions be sold as non-refundable, final purchases. If a client chooses to cancel, they will not receive a refund.
