Paul Atreides, aka Muad’Dib, Usul, and The Preacher (10175 AG- 10219 AG), is a central character to the Dune series. He was born on the planet Caladan as the son of Duke Leto Atreides I and his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica. He married Bene Gesserit trained Irulan Corrino, but did not produce an heir by her.

However, the Harkonnen bloodline continued to exist through Bene Gesserit breeding programs for more than 1500 years thereafter, and ultimately through the mingling with the Atreides bloodline, with Paul Atreides being the grandson of Vladimir Harkonnen.

Glossu Rabban is the violent and sadistic nephew of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. He is primarily featured in Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune, but also appears in the Prelude to Dune prequel trilogy (1999–2001) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

2 Answers. The BG wanted a KH so they could control the universe. The patrilineal memories were probably a cool side effect (they could access that huge untapped well of knowledge) but the real advantage was having an undefeatable prescient warrior/diplomat doing whatever they commanded.

When the Emperor launched an attack on Arrakeen in the guise of Harkonnen troops, Idaho was killed by the Emperor’s Sardaukar by a blow to the head, but not before he dispatched no less than nineteen Sardaukar soldiers single-handedly.

The secretive and mysterious cult of the Bene Gesserit from Frank Herbert’s Dune have a human breeding program as one of their prime goals (perhaps the prime goal). As a result, they’ve developed a definition of human that does not actually include all people.

Paul Atreides is a (quite literally) misbegotten “chosen one.” He is part of a eugenics program to produce the messianic Kwisatz Haderach. However, Paul was intended to be a daughter who would become a mother to the savior. He is even positioned in the breeding program as the intended father of the Kwisatz Haderach.

As DVK mentioned, Fenring was a failed attempt at the Kwisatz Haderach project. He had much of the potential, and some of the talents, that the Bene Gesserit bred for, but a genetic anomaly caused him to be a eunuch, making him a dead end for his branch of the breeding program.

Life with Paul After the defeat of House Harkonnen and House Corrino on Arrakis, and Paul’s subsequent ascent to Emperor and marriage to Irulan Corrino, Chani became his official concubine and remained his exclusive partner.

Leto also appears as a child in the prequel The Winds of Dune (2009). Leto is the son of Paul Atreides and his Fremen concubine Chani, and the twin brother of Ghanima. Leto II is the second child of Paul to bear that name, the first having been killed as an infant by the Emperor’s Sardaukar in Dune.

Paul is not a villain, he doesn’t intentionally cause harm for the pleasure of it, not like the Harkonnens, and he isn’t driven by fear like the Emperor is to commit atrocities. He does do his best to set things right, to regain his place and exact justice. To some he is a hero, to others a despicable character.

At the end of the first novel, Paul is successful at defeating House Harkonnen and the Corrino dynasty, but his refusal to implement the Golden Path (in subsequent books) disqualifies him from being a traditional hero. He’s not an anti-hero, but a tragic/failed hero.

In the classic Dune series, Paul Atreides became a super being with the ability to see the future; something the Bene Geserit called a Kwisatz Haderach.

Muad’dib is derived from Arabic. The word is a participle active. This fictional word could be derived two from probable Arabic-Semitic roots.

A quick look at Frank Herbert’s appendix to Dune, “the Religion of Dune”, reveals that of the “ten ancient teachings”, half are overtly Islamic. And outside of the religious realm, he filled the terminology of Dune’s universe with words related to Islamic sovereignty.

Islamic theology, mysticism, and the history of the Arab world clearly influenced Dune, but part of Herbert’s genius lay in his willingness to reach for more idiosyncratic sources of inspiration. Chakobsa, a Caucasian hunting language, becomes the language of a galactic diaspora in Herbert’s universe.
