The common ostrich (Struthio camelus), or simply ostrich, is a species of flightless bird native to certain large areas of Africa and is the largest living bird species. It is one of two extant species of ostriches, the only living members of the genus Struthio in the ratite order of birds.

An ostrich can live 50 to 75 years. The largest and heaviest living bird, the ostrich is flightless and instead is built for running. With its powerful legs, the ostrich can sprint in short bursts up to 43 mph (70 kph), and can maintain a steady speed of 31 mph (50 kph).

Where do ostriches live? Ostriches live throughout Africa’s semiarid plains and woodlands.

Although an ostrich eats mostly roots, flowers and fruits, it may also take insects, lizards and small tortoises. It shares the open plains and woodlands with animals such as wildebeest and zebra.

Eight hearts from healthy adult male ostriches (1.5–2-year-old and 122.1 ± 3.9 kg body weight) were obtained from the slaughterhouse immediately after slaughter. Before removing the hearts, their anatomical positions were studied inside the thorax.

“The urine from the birds is kind of like an ammonia,” said Greg Butts, whose property abuts the menagerie’s home. “It makes manure smell like Liz Claiborne.” “The dust, the feathers, the pulverized feces and urine . . . all over the neighborhood,” said Vin Fichter, who lives downwind of the farm.

Ostriches were domesticated (and only partly) in South Africa in the mid-19th century. South African farmers and their British colonial overlords were responding to an enormous demand for fluffy ostrich feathers used in Victorian-era fashions.
