Louisiana’s sub-tropical environment provides a good, but perhaps not ideal, environment for rice production. Medium grain rice once dominated production and consumption in Louisiana, due in large part to the medium grain varieties agricultural hardiness when compared to the more gastronomically coveted long-grains. In 2015, long-grain rice accounted for 85 percent of the rice grown in Louisiana.

Louisiana is one of the nation’s top three rice-producing states, growing mostly long grain rice. While southwestern Louisiana is the primary center for rice production and milling, rice is also grown in the northeastern part of the state.

Rice originates in tropical lowlands and requires a long, warm growing season but is cultivated commercially in California and some of the Southeastern states. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9b through 10a. It can be grown wherever nighttime temperatures stay above 60 degrees for at least three months of the year.

Rice is grown in water primarily to stave off pests, and keep weeds away from the rice fields. Neither weeds nor pests can survive in water for prolonged periods, but rice can.

Though all plants need water to grow, most plants can’t be too wet for too long. Rice plants can tolerate wetter conditions than most; they can grow in very wet soils and can even tolerate short periods underwater. Farmers often take advantage of rice’s ability to tolerate water and briefly flood fields to kill weeds.

Growing Requirements An area that gets full sun, a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day, is required to grow rice.

Rice needs water for evapotranspiration, seepage and percolation, as well as for management practices such as land preparation and drainage. Submerged rice cultivation practices help to promote water percolation and groundwater recharge, control flooding during heavy rains, and prevent weed growth in rice fields.
