In 1998, a group of investors including Steinem purchased Ms. For three years, it was published under Liberty Media for Women, LLC, before the Feminist Majority Foundation took it over. It continues to publish a print magazine today.

Ms. Arlington County, Virginia, U.S. Ms. is an American liberal feminist magazine co-founded in 1972 by feminist and social/political activist Gloria Steinem and African-American feminist and child welfare advocate Dorothy Pitman Hughes. It was the first national American feminist magazine.

The magazine’s chief purpose was to address the concerns of contemporary women and to provide coverage of national and international news of particular relevance to women. It also devoted pages to women’s history and to stories and poetry written by women.

This first issue of Ms. Magazine, published July 1, 1972, features Wonder Woman on its cover. Ms., founded by activists Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pittman Hughes, is a periodical providing “feminist news and information.” Introduced as a preview within a December 1971 issue of New York Magazine, Ms.

NOW focuses on advocating for justice and equality in reproductive healthcare and the economy and continues its work to put a stop to violence against women and discrimination based on race and sexual orientation. The fight to end workplace discrimination is not over.

NOW’s original mission statement read “The purpose of NOW is to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men…” (now.org) .

Since our founding in 1966, NOW’s purpose is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.
