2015 – The U.S. Supreme Court makes same-sex marriages legal in all 50 states in Obergefell v. Hodges.

Same-sex marriages are currently licensed and recognized in all U.S. states, District of Columbia, territories, excepting the aforementioned American Samoa and some [[Same-sex marriage in tribal nations in the United States|Native American tribal nation.

Same-sex marriage supporters rejoice outside the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., on Friday after the U.S Supreme Court handed down a ruling regarding same-sex marriage. The high court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states.

In November 2020, Nevada became the first state to repeal its constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. As of 2015 same-sex marriage is now federally legal in all 50 states due to a ruling from the Supreme Court.

California allows same-sex marriages and will grant divorces to same-sex couples who have lived in the state for six months or who were married in California and cannot divorce where they live.

Same sex marriage became legal in Texas in 2015 after the U.S. Supreme Court issued their decision on the case Obergefell v Hodges [PDF], which legalized same-sex marriage in every state.

In re MARRIAGE CASES. Offering a legal relationship called “marriage” to opposite-sex couples while consigning gay couples to “domestic partnerships” impinges upon the fundamental right to marry by denying such legal relationships equal dignity and respect.

Georgia same-sex marriage is legal—and so is same-sex divorce. Types of divorce such as contested and uncontested divorces, mediation, and legal separation now apply equally to same-sex couples.

Recognition States As of September 2013, California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington have all legalized same-sex marriage.

This prompted lawmakers to explicitly outlaw same-sex marriage. In 1973, Maryland became the first state to do so. Other states quickly followed, with Virginia, Arizona and Oklahoma passing similar laws in 1975, and Florida, California, Wyoming and Utah doing so in 1977.

Outside of Europe, same-sex marriage is now legal in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, New Zealand, South Africa and Uruguay, as well as in parts of Mexico. And in May 2019, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to allow gays and lesbians to legally wed.
