Most of Macbeth is written in verse, so it’s interesting to watch out for where it isn’t used. In Macbeth, prose is mainly used by the lower-status characters, such as the murderers and the porter, or when characters are losing a sense of themselves, like when Lady Macbeth sleepwalks.

Macbeth is given the esteemed titles of the Thane of Cawdor and Glamis by King of Scotland, Duncan, and these titles indicate that Macbeth is of great political importance. Macbeth’s blind ambition, along with the provoking of his wife, lead him to undertake a violent and bloody path to the throne.

The main theme of Macbeth —the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints—finds its most powerful expression in the play’s two main characters. Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement.

A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia.

The play begins with the brief appearance of a trio of witches and then moves to a military camp, where the Scottish King Duncan hears the news that his generals, Macbeth and Banquo, have defeated two separate invading armies—one from Ireland, led by the rebel Macdonwald, and one from Norway.

The wife of the play’s tragic hero, Macbeth (a Scottish nobleman), Lady Macbeth goads her husband into committing regicide, after which she becomes queen of Scotland. She dies off-stage in the last act, an apparent suicide.

Lady Macbeth is even more ambitious and ruthless than her husband. As soon as an opportunity to gain power presents itself, she has a plan in mind. She uses her influence to persuade Macbeth that they are taking the right course of action and even takes part in the crime herself.

Although Lady Macbeth seems to be the one in control, in the middle of the play Macbeth begins to make decisions without her knowledge. She loses control. She starts off not caring about murder but in the end she goes mad with guilt.

However, we can hypothesize that Lady Macbeth suffered from dissociative amnesia (AD) as well as depression (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

Lady Macbeth is sometimes been called “The Fourth Witch” of the drama. To Goethe, she is ‘The super Witch’. In fact, Lady Macbeth’s commanding role in murdering Duncan, her cruel and Witch like approach to the horrid deed is simply amazing.
