Modeled after Satan in Milton’s Paradise Lost, Lord Asriel is the gentlemanly devil who plans to overthrow God and establish a Republic of Heaven. In other stories, Asriel would almost certainly be the villain. In Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan tempts Eve with the fruit from the tree of knowledge.

Lord Asriel was Lyra Silvertongue’s father, and a powerful man who wished to destroy the kingdom of the Authority and replace it with the Republic of Heaven.

Lord Asriel is one of the most powerful characters in the world of His Dark Materials. In season 1, he journeys to Svalbard, in the far north, in order to study the properties of the mysterious substance Dust and its potential connection to a city in another world.

It is later revealed that Coulter is in fact Lyra’s mother by her love affair with Lord Asriel (her title of “Mrs” comes from her marriage to Edward Coulter, who died before the events in the books.) In Northern Lights John Faa says that she fell in love with Asriel as soon as they met.

It is totally taboo to touch another human’s daemon — even in the heat of battle. Daemons can, on occasion, touch other daemons, usually when their respective humans are physically touching: they nuzzle when their humans embrace, they fight when their humans are fighting, etc.

Lyra Silvertongue, previously and legally known as Lyra Belacqua, was a young girl from Oxford in Brytain. Her dæmon was Pantalaimon, who settled as a pine marten when she was twelve years old.

In the general sense, daemon is an older form of the word “demon”, from the Greek δαίμων. “Daemon” is actually a much older form of “demon”; daemons have no particular bias towards good or evil, but rather serve to help define a person’s character or personality.

Form. In Lyra’s world, every human or witch has a dæmon which manifests itself as an animal. It is separate from and outside its human, despite being an integral part of that person (i.e. they are one entity in two bodies). Humans in every universe are said to have dæmons, although in some universes they are invisible.

His Dark Materials is a retelling of Paradise Lost. Instead of an all-powerful God, he crafted a frail, petty deity called The Authority. And instead of a great fall after the loss of innocence, the books celebrate a young girl’s growing up and defying an all-powerful order called The Magisterium.
