Koshari is a popular Egyptian street food made from lentils, rice, vermicelli, macaroni and chickpeas with a spicy tomato sauce topped with crunchy fried onions. It’s not vegan (because pasta contains eggs) but is vegetarian and compared to many fast food meals it is pretty healthy.

Even though Jordan is largely a Muslim country, drinking alcohol is not a social taboo; it is readily available in restaurants and hotels. There are also bars in tourist areas and some of the major cities particularly those with a significant Christian community.

Jordan is simply not a rich country like Saudi Arabia, and those families that do possess fortunes tend to be discreet about it. Of course, there are exclusive neighborhoods in Amman but, on the whole, wealth is not flashed around. Poverty, on the other hand, does exist in Jordan, especially in cities.

You might be surprised to see male locals greeting each other with hugs and kisses on the cheeks – the same goes for females, as this is a socially acceptable method of greeting. On the other hand, it is frowned on for couples to show affection in public, from holding hands to kissing.

The legal drinking age in Jordan is 18 and an ID must be presented when ordering or purchasing alcohol.

Jordan is a conservative society. You should dress modestly and behave courteously. It’s illegal to drink alcohol on the street but permissible in bars, clubs, hotels and private homes.
