Chapter 1: A Social Gathering Damaso and Laruja impress upon the rubicund youth the quality of indolence of the native population, but the conversation diverges as Sibyla asks Damaso about his tenure in San Diego.

He symbolizes the rich Pilipinos who oppress their fellow Pilipinos in exchange for the influence and the riches that they might gain from their powerful associations. “Kapitan Tiago” actually is a fusion of two persons during Rizal’s time.

Chapter 6

In 1895, on the day of Maria Clara’s death, Capitan Tiago was watched over by Basilio as he fell ill due to opium poisoning. Right before his death, Capitan Tiago signed a will forged by Padre Irene, causing his wealth to be distributed to religious corporations rather than Basilio as intended.

Maria Clara betrays Ibarra even though she loves him. Her motive is to prevent the identity of her true, biological father from being revealed.

He was buried in San Diego’s catholic cemetery, but Ibarra eventually learns that Father Dámaso ordered a gravedigger to exhume his body and transport him to the Chinese cemetery in order to separate him from non-heretical Catholics.

The tax collector was greatly irked and picked a fight with Don Rafael. Unfortunately, the Spanish tax collector fell, got his head hit against a rock, and died. He was imprisoned, and just when the matter was almost settled, he got sick and died in jail.

Suicidal, Simoun drinks poison and as he is dying, accepts that his violent methods were wrong. Showing a change in his character from the beginning of El Filibusterismo (El Fili), instead of killing many people like he had planned, Simoun kills no one at any point in the book other than himself.

Fired at by the Guardia Civil, Basilio was grazed by a bullet before returning home, comforted by his mother. Telling her what had happened, Basilio later fell asleep, dreaming of his brother being beaten and killed by the sacristan mayor and Padre Salvi.

When he intervened, he accidentally killed the collector and was subsequently imprisoned. Before he could inflict additional pain on the boy, Don Rafael intervened. In the process, the tax collector was pushed and he died after his head hit a rock.

Maria Clara died before he became a fugitive and eventually died as well at then end of the book two. It is said that Jose Rizal based Maria Clara from his real-life girlfriend and cousin, Leonor Rivera. Leonor was seriously affected by Rizal’s departure. She fell ill because sadness brought her sleepless nights.

The doctrine was named after María Clara from José Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tángere. Clara is characterized as reserved and shy and was later considered an “ideal” role model for women in Filipino culture, although such notion was imposed by Spanish colonizers.
