Kaaba, also spelled Kaʿbah, small shrine located near the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca and considered by Muslims everywhere to be the most sacred spot on Earth. During most of the year the Kaaba is covered with an enormous cloth of black brocade, the kiswah.

Muslims who are located in the hemisphere centred on Mecca, which is less than 10,000 km, can determine the direction of the Qibla by observing the sun on these days at the right moment. The compass direction to the sun then gives the Qibla.

Qibla is the fixed direction towards the Ka’bah in the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It’s the direction which all Muslims face when performing their prayers, wherever they are in the world.

Islamic tradition says that these verses were revealed during a prayer congregation; Muhammad and his followers immediately changed their direction from Jerusalem to Mecca in the middle of the prayer ritual. There are different reports of the qibla direction when Muhammad was in Mecca (before his migration to Medina).

Twice every year, the Sun culminates at the zenith of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam, at local solar noon, allowing the qibla (the direction towards the Kaaba) to be ascertained in other parts of the world by observing the shadows cast by vertical objects.

The full moon will align directly above the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site, in Saudi Arabia’s Mecca on Thursday, January 28, according to astronomers.

In Islam the sacred direction is towards Mecca, or more precisely, towards the sacred Kaaba in Mecca. Muslims face this direction in prayer and during various other ritual acts. Muslim astronomers from the 9th century onwards dealt with the determination of the qibla, as the sacred direction is called in Arabic.

First qibla The historical significance of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Islam is further emphasized by the fact that Muslims turned towards al-Aqsa when they prayed for a period of 16 or 17 months after migration to Medina in 624; it thus became the qibla (“direction”) that Muslims faced for prayer.

The guidelines are much more reasonable: Daily prayer in space is not linked to sunrises and sunsets, but to a 24-hour cycle based on the “home” time zone of Baikonur, the Russian-leased launch site in Kazakhstan. Five meditations every 24 hours will suffice.

No planes fly over the Holy Kaaba because there is no airport in the city of Makkah. The second reason airplanes don’t fly over the Holy Kaaba is due to the fact that the Saudi government has categorized the city of Makkah as a non-flying zone for commercial flights for its respect.
