The five brightest planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn – have been known since ancient times and can easily be seen with the naked eye if one knows when and where to look. They are visible for much of the year, except for short periods of time when they are too close to the Sun to observe.

Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen even from most cities. You do not need special equipment to witness the phenomenion as the planets can be seen with the naked eye, however if you have binoculars or a small telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting the giant planet.

With the naked eye, you can see five of the planets in our solar system (technically you can also see the Earth). The visible planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. The remaining planets (Neptune, Uranus, Pluto) are too far away and too dim to see without a lot of patience and a nice telescope.

However, unlike the web browser, the Google Earth mobile app doesn’t let you travel to other planets like Mercury, Venus or Mars. Since users don’t have the option of travelling to other celestial bodies — there’s no ‘Star Trek’-like whoosh either.

You can now explore numerous planets, moons and the International Space Station using a new Google Maps feature. You can scan our moon’s craters or the methane lakes of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. There is even a stunning view of Earth from the International Space Station.

Here’s how to get there:

1. First, head over to Google Maps.
2. Down in the bottom left, you should see an icon that lets you put the map in “Google Earth” mode.
3. Wait for the once-flat map to load in 3D.
4. Once you’re zoomed all the way out, just wait a second.
5. (If nothing shows up, you might have the “Explore” tab closed.

If you already have Google Earth 5.0 on your computer, just click on the tab on the top toolbar that has a picture of Saturn, and click on Moon. If you click on the Apollo 11 flag, you can zoom in on that location and take a tour of the first landing site on the Moon!

Open Google Earth. Look at the icons just above the Earth image. Click on the one that looks like Saturn and select Moon from the dropdown. This will take you to Google Moon.

The agency recently released “Mars Trek,” a Google Earth-like experience that lets users click around the surface of the Red Planet. It even features a zoom function that provides detailed views of landmarks like Olympus Mons, which, at 379 miles in diameter, is the largest volcano in the solar system.

However, the surface is not hospitable to humans or most known life forms due to the radiation, greatly reduced air pressure, and an atmosphere with only 0.16% oxygen. Human survival on Mars would require living in artificial Mars habitats with complex life-support systems.

Breathing on Mars In these conditions humans die within minutes unless a pressure suit provides life support. If Mars’ atmospheric pressure could rise above 19 kPa (2.8 psi), then a pressure suit would not be required. Visitors would only need to wear a mask that supplied 100% oxygen under positive pressure.

Some conditions would make it difficult for plants to grow on Mars. For example, Mars’s extreme cold temperatures make life difficult to sustain. Sunlight and heat reaching that planet is much less than what the Earth gets. This is because Mars is about 50 million miles farther away from the sun.

While planet Jupiter is an unlikely place for living things to take hold, the same is not true of some of its many moons. Europa is one of the likeliest places to find life elsewhere in our solar system. There is evidence of a vast ocean just beneath its icy crust, where life could possibly be supported.

In fact, this is what scientists have been searching for lately, and was proven through modern discoveries thanks to chemistry; the sky can rain diamonds on Saturn and Jupiter.
