Drilling into marble is very different from drilling into wood. Marble, like other stone and ceramic materials, is prone to cracking. With a little patience and the right tools, you can drill into marble and avoid splitting or cracking.

Carbide Tipped Bit Carbide tipped bits are similar to diamond bits except they use carbide on the drilling tip of the bit. They can be used with all but the hardest types of marbles and come in a variety of sizes.

How to Drill Through Marble Tiles

1. Use Masking Tape to Stop the Drill Slipping. When you mark up the hole, make sure to cover it in masking tape.
2. Buy a Diamond Tile Drill Bit. We decided to use a diamond tile drill bit for the job.
3. Keep the Drill Bit Wet.
4. Take It Slow and Steady.

Never attempt to use a screw that has a larger outside diameter than the inside diameter of the hole that you have drilled. You cannot thread into porcelain, glass, marble, granite or other natural stone material.

Enlarging a hole in the counter is accomplished with a special diamond drill bit. This particular type of drill bit moves through the marble like a wood drill bit drills through wood. The correct size of diamond drill bit must be obtained prior to starting the project.

When enlarging an existing hole, merely choose a larger bit according to the size you need the hole to be. Center the drill bit on top of the other hole and drill down through, letting the bit eat away at the sides and carve out a larger diameter.

You can use one of two methods to make the hole wider in a porcelain sink. You can use a grinder to wear down the porcelain, or you can use a diamond grit hole saw to cut a new hole. The hole saw is definitely faster, but it’s a little riskier because it generates more heat.

If your sink base cabinet is large enough, it is possible to enlarge the sink cutout to install a larger sink. This method also works for any counter that has a plywood underlayment that can be cut, including tile counters, with the tiles removed, and vinyl counters.

You have to buy a new counter and make the right size hole, or buy a larger sink to fit the hole (which you will have to cut again anyway). First of all, the sink needs sufficient support around its perimeter for clamping, sealing and support.

The metal on a wood rasp would be way to soft to make any type of dent in the concrete. The only thing you will do is destroy the rasp. You should use a roto hammer with the proper sized bit to widen the hole. Yes, you can and it will work.
