It’s Fine to Start a Sentence with a Coordinating Conjunction. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage (MWDEU) says, “Everybody agrees that it’s all right to begin a sentence with ‘and,’” and notes that you can find examples of it all the way back to Old English.

It’s perfectly fine to start a sentence with I, or but, or and, or whatever. It’s perfectly fine for a short essay to have four paragraphs or eight instead of five. There’s nothing wrong with using passive form.

If you don’t want to start sentences with conjunctions, you are free to do so. A simple way to do it would be simply to stop using and, but, and or to connect clauses or phrases. Connecting words, between two words, or before the last of a list of words, OK: I saw Bill and Bob at the picnic.

Give a general introduction to the topic for broad audience. Narrow the focus to your particular topic. State your research problem and aims….

• Give a preview of your main results and state the contribution of the work (optional)

The introduction has five important responsibilities: get the audience ‘s attention, introduce the topic, explain its relevance to the audience, state a thesis or purpose, and outline the main points.
