Is it cruel to keep all animals in captivity? No, and there are many commonly kept animals who’s needs we can actually meet – dogs and cats are examples of that, as are rabbits and guinea pigs. These animals do just fine in captivity. Dwarf hamsters can do just fine too providing they are kept in a large enough set up.

Gerbils are bigger, slightly more expensive, and dislike living alone. But gerbils are also friendlier and enjoy handling, so they don’t bite as much as hamsters. Gerbils smell far less than hamsters and are far more intelligent pets. The care needs of both pets are about the same.

The main reason is that their eyesight is poor. They rely instead on other senses such as smell, sound, and taste. Sticking a finger into their cage can often result in a bite, as the hamster wants to know if this strange new thing is edible. Hamster bites hurt and can cause bleeding.

A hamster won’t be happy just in a plastic cage; you have to give it bedding as well. Wooden shavings are a good start, but can be bad for your hamster’s health.

Hamsters do form strong bonds with their owners & also get used to routine so Stella most likely is missing your daughter when she’s away but it sounds as though she enjoys her time with you too & I don’t think you can really do much more than you are, she’s probably just a little upset by the change but sounds fine …

Empty toilet paper rolls are perfectly safe for a hamster. They are made with plain, ordinary cardboard so they are pretty safe for your hamster to chew on. You can also use a toilet roll as a toy.
