In addition, building jetties and adding sand in attempts to keep an island stable can hasten erosion elsewhere. Building on a barrier island can also limit the island’s usefulness in protecting the mainland coast from powerful storms as well as eliminate important ecosystems, such as dunes and salt marshes.

And over time many barrier islands move landward, toward the shore. This typically happens because local sea levels rise, so waves wash over the islands during storms, moving sand from the ocean side to the inland side.

They form due to longshore drift and protect shallow brackish bays or salt marshes behind them. They general form in areas of low shore gradient.

Scientists have proposed numerous explanations for the formation of barrier islands for more than 150 years. There are three major theories: offshore bar, spit accretion, and submergence.

Barrier islands form in three ways. They can form from spits, from drowned dune ridges or from sand bars. Longshore drift is the movement of sand parallel to the shore caused by the angle of the waves breaking on the beach. When a storm such as a hurricane digs an inlet through the spit a barrier island is formed.

Louisiana’s barrier islands are eroding so quickly that according to some estimates they will disappear by the end of this century. Although there is little human habitation on these islands, their erosion may have a severe impact on the environment landward of the barriers.

Since erosion is unavoidable, the problem becomes discovering ways to prevent it. Present beach erosion prevention methods include sand dunes, vegetation, seawalls, sandbags, and sand fences. Based on the research conducted, it is evident that new ways to prevent erosion must be obtained.

In the United States, barrier islands occur offshore where gently sloping sandy coastlines, as opposed to rocky coastlines, exist. Consequently, most barrier islands are found along the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast as far north as Long Island, New York.

This is the process coastal geologists say has been hindered on much of the Outer Banks. Though it looks natural, the dune that runs for 50 miles along the Banks was man-made, created out of wood and brush and sand by the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps.

When Sheriff Peterkin arrives to the airport tarmac, she attempts to arrest Ward because she found out that he was responsible for Big John’s death. While arresting Ward, Rafe intervenes and shoots her, to ‘save’ his dad, in the hopes that he would now deserve his fathers love and affection.

In Episode 8, a flashback reveals that Ward Cameron (Charles Esten) and Big John had been working on finding the Royal Merchant together. Believing he was dead, Ward pushed Big John’s body overboard. However, we later learn that John B’s dad actually survived and washed up on a nearby island, à la Castaway.

Into this already crossed-up situation drops Ward Cameron (Charles Esten of Nashville), who’s initially portrayed as benevolent, offering to take John B. in and be his guardian. It turns out, however, that Ward’s a bad, bad man. As the first season of Outer Banks nears its climax, John B.

He’s not successful and John B escapes. After a fight with the Pogues in the hanger, Barry makes it clear to Rafe that “he owns him now” after finding out he killed Sheriff Peterkin.

and the Pogues as they investigated the disappearance of John B.’s father, who went missing a year before the events of Outer Banks. Along the way, they also learn that John B.’s dad left him clues to a treasure before his death. To save Ward, his son, Rafe Cameron, shoots Sheriff Peterkin who dies in the hospital.

The beginning of the season suggests that Kiara and John B have feelings for one another. But when John B kisses Kiara, she reminds him of the Pogues’ rule, “no Pogue-on-Pogue macking”. The two remain close friends, but when John B starts a relationship with Sarah, Kiara is deeply upset.
