Under the guidance of economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur was the first institute in India to offer Computer science education. The earliest computer courses were started at IIT Kanpur in August 1963 on an IBM 1620 system.

According to IIT-Kanpur authorities, the campus is ragging-free but helpline numbers have been provided so that the students can contact the officials concerned in times of emergency.

“Ragging is banned in IIT-D. There is no ragging here. It is just friendly interaction,” said a third year student of computer engineering who is a resident of Niligiri Hostel.

Ragging is rampant at IITs Now, all of the faculty, including deans of various IITs strictly prohibit ragging on the campuses. Now seniors may indulge in friendly ragging during the first few days of college in an effort to break the ice amongst the freshers.

IIT-Delhi asks for undertaking against drinking, smoking. The IIT-Delhi administration has decided to make students from the next batch sign an undertaking during admissions that they will not drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or use drugs on campus. Students found violating the undertaking will be penalised or expelled.

Placements: Chemical engineering department is quite good in IIT Kanpur with more than 90% placement. Average package is about 14-15 lacs and almost all of the students placed. Although core jobs are few yet there are many opportunities in coding and consulting services.

IIT Kanpur has produced the outstanding alumni but there are few people who have touched as many lives and apparantly has helped so many start-ups as has Rajeev Motwani. Rajeev Motwani was part of IITK’s first CS batch completing his BTech in 1983.
