Hydrogen has the highest thermal conductivity of any gas. The electrical conductivity of hydrogen varies according to temperature. If it is cold enough, it can be a superconductor. If it is hot enough, as a plasma, it is highly conductive.

Metals

Nonmetals are poor conductors of heat and electricity, because electrons are not free to move. Nonmetals are found to the right of the stair-step line, except for hydrogen which is in group 1. Group 18 are the noble gases, which are all nonmetals.

Silver and copper are the two best conductors of heat and electricity. Lead is the poorest conductor of heat. Bismuth, mercury and iron are also poor conductors.

Potassium metal is soft and white with a silvery lustre, has a low melting point, and is a good conductor of heat and electricity.

Calcium atoms have smaller radii than potassium atoms since calcium atoms have a greater nuclear charge. Each calcium atom will be closer to the delocalized electrons. Thus, the bonds in calcium will be stronger than that in potassium.

Hydrogen is most often classified as a nonmetal because it has many of the properties of nonmetals. For example, it is a gas at room temperature. However, hydrogen shares properties with the alkali metals in group 1. In liquid form, hydrogen conducts electricity just like a metal does.

Aerogel is more expensive, but definitely the best type of insulation. Fiberglass is cheap, but requires careful handling. Mineral wool is effective, but not fire resistant. Cellulose is fire resistant, eco-friendly, and effective, but hard to apply.
