It is unsafe to microwave plastic containers. This myth comes from the circulation of an email hoax over the past few years. Medical research has indicated that plastic containers marked “microwave-safe” pose no threat. Polypropylene containers are microwave safe and can be reused to reheat food again and again.

A: Generally speaking, there is no need to wash containers before recycling them, according to CalRecycle, the state agency that oversees product recycling in California. “The only exception is styrofoam take-out containers, as they get especially contaminated by food.”

There’s no standard rule of thumb about when it’s time to throw out your plastic containers. How long your containers last depends on how well you care for them, and the quality of plastic they’re made of. You’ll know it’s time to toss your containers if they become warped or cracked.
