A: Not all aspects of H.P. Lovecraft’s work or the Cthulhu Mythos are in the public domain. Because HPL died over 70 years ago, his individual writings are now in the public domain, but the Mythos was/is a shared creation—even in HPL’s lifetime (“the Lovecraft Circle”).

Only five Greek to Latin translations (retitled The Necronomicon) are held in libraries (The British Museum, The Bibliothèque nationale de France, The University of Buenos Aires, Widener Library at Harvard University, and Miskatonic University), though private copies do exist.

In Lovecraft’s stories, the Necronomicon is described as an ancient text compiled by Abdul Alhazred (called the “Mad Arab”) in the 8th century, containing magical spells and incantations for summoning monsters and archaic deities.

The Necronomicon is a fictional book of magic created by the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It is a Greek-sounding word commonly translated as “book of dead names”. It is pronounced “neck-ro-nom-ih-kon”. Like most of his ideas, the Necronomicon came to Lovecraft in his dreams.

Abdul Alhazred died at an unknown date when, while walking through a marketplace somewhere in the Middle East, he was ripped to shreds by invisible demons after being lifted into the air by said demons.

He is omnipotent beyond the power of the Great Old Ones, such as Cthulhu, and even his fellow Outer Gods, including Yog-Sothoth and Yibb-Tstll, and all other beings — and is the sole most powerful being in the entire mythos. Azathoth is seen as the all-powerful creator of all of existence.
