So Gulliver’s Travels is a fictional tale masquerading as a true story, yet the very fictionality of the account enables Swift author to reveal what it would not be possible to articulate through a genuine account of the nation.

He married Abigail Erick in 1664 and died in 1667, leaving his wife, baby daughter, and unborn son—the younger Jonathan—to the care of his brothers.

Swift wrote that his satiric project in the Travels was built upon a “great foundation of Misanthropy” and that his intention was “to vex the world”, not entertain it. In its abridged and reader-friendly form, sanitised of sarcasm and black humour, Gulliver’s Travels has become a children’s classic.

After learning that Skyresh Bolgolam (the admiral), Flimnap (the treasurer), Limtoc (the general), Lalcon (the chamberlain), and Balmuff (the chief justice of Lilliput) have issued articles of impeachment for treason against him, Gulliver escapes from Lilliput by crossing the channel to Blefuscu.

After some time, Gulliver is offered captaincy of a ship and recruits seamen who are really pirates. They put him on a boat and leave him to the mercy of the wind and the sea. He reaches an island which is inhabited by noble horsemen or the Houyhnhnms, and their servants, the Yahoos who have human form.

The Definition of Satire In this case, Swift used satire as a way to express the issue of poverty in Ireland and to mock the rich’s view towards the poor during the famine.

6- What is ironic about the Lilliputians feeding Gulliver? –The Lilliputians are feeding Gulliver with massive quantities of food and drink. They are treating him like any other guest who might come to their island, despite his potential threat. They behave in a “civilized” manner toward him.

He opened his mouth and pointed to it to tell the Lilliputians that he was hungry. They fed him with baskets of bread and meat and rolled a barrel to quench his thirst.

He wants the emperor to tie Gulliver down and send him back to Lilliput. What does the king of Blefuscu refuse to let Gulliver take home with him? His native Blefuscudian people.

Every morning Gulliver asks the emperor to set him free, but the emperor refuses, saying that Gulliver must be patient. The emperor also orders him to be searched to ensure that he does not have any weapons. In the process, all of his weapons are taken away.

Does Gulliver change as the story progresses? Does he learn from his adventures? At the same time, Gulliver himself becomes more and more a subject of satire as the story progresses. At the beginning, he is a standard issue European adventurer; by the end, he has become a misanthrope who totally rejects human society.

Swift is definitely playing with fire with this one: the Lilliputian Emperor represents the King of England at the time of the publication of Gulliver’s Travels, George I. George was a strongly pro-Whig king.

Though Gulliver was upset at first, he managed to adapt to their environment and helped them in many ways, as they freed him, after some weeks. He also helpful them to make peace with their neighbouring kingdom of Blefuscu. He lived there peacefully for many years.
