Q. Should you play God of War in order?
I recommend the original God of War. That you may get to know Kratos as he’s properly introduced. Then play the prequels in Chronological Order (Ascension, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta), before playing God of War II, III, and IV in that order.

Kratos, because of his hatred to the gods for they have done, declares war on the gods. While destroying the city of Rhodes, Zeus tricks Kratos into draining his Godly powers into a sword “Blade of Olympus” and use it to strike down his enemies. It’s here when he earned his eternal hatred for the gods.

For all of the terrible things Kratos has done in the name of rage and vengeance, it’s hard not to see why he was angry after all of the things he’d been through. Some injustices were worse than others though, and these five moments are the cream of the crop for times that Kratos had a good reason to be angry.
