Liquid white is not the same thing as gesso! Gesso has an acrylic base, so you don’t want to mix your oil paints into that. Gesso needs to be completely dry before adding any sort of oil paint or medium on top.

Gesso prepares (or “primes”) the surface for painting, making the surface slightly textured and ready to accept acrylic paint. Without gesso, the paint would soak into the weave of the canvas. The word gesso is a noun, but many artists also use it as a verb.

Gesso Primer. A common question regarding acrylic painting is if you need to use a gesso primer. Technically, you don’t. It provides you with a nice, slightly more absorbent surface to work on, especially if your working on board or raw canvas, but for a pre-primed canvas it’s unnecessary.

If you are going for that signature smoky-mountain effect so prevalent in landscapes, these techniques are perfect. You can always allow the painting to dry and return to it once those first layers have firmed up.

You can make a “generic version” of Liquid White by mixing up some white paint with whatever oil you use as a medium or make a “generic version” of Liquid Clear by using the oil just as it is. If you want the medium to dry faster, add some turpenoid (odorless turpentine) (Buy from Amazon) or Liquin.

The primary difference between Titanium white and Mixing white is opacity and tinting strength. Titanium being more opaque and having stronger tinting strength. Mixing White 103 (with Safflower Oil) has a fairly event amount of both making it slightly more transparent and ideal for mixing colors.

Cremnitz White is a particular version of pure Lead White which gives it a stringy consistency. It comprises lead carbonate (white lead) and does not include the Zinc Oxide (as Flake White does) which helps it to dry quickly.
