Biometrics have weaknesses too—all authentication factors do. One day, we will realize that biometrics such as Face ID are no more perfect than the passwords we used before. That’s why the only truly secure authentication choice is multifactor authentication.

Here’s the thing, Touch ID and Face ID are pretty secure ways of protecting your phone, especially on the iPhone, which uses a separate processor, known as Secure Enclave, to handle decryption. Still, neither method is perfect.

Privacy is incredibly important to Apple. Face ID data – including mathematical representations of your face – is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. This data will be refined and updated as you use Face ID to improve your experience, including when you successfully authenticate.

Compared to their predecessors, more recent in-display fingerprint sensor tech tends to be both faster and more generous in terms of the physical size of the sensor. Regardless, Apple’s iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have all opted to exclude the feature in favor of Face ID.

Apple then announced its new phones—sans fingerprint sensors—once again. Instead of needing to pick up a phone and position it in front of your face, you need only press your finger on the display. However, optical fingerprint detectors may be less secure than facial recognition or other fingerprint detection methods.

The Ceramic Shield of the ‌iPhone 12‌ significantly outperformed the ‌iPhone 11‌’s cover glass. In a separate scratch test, the ‌iPhone 12‌ was able to withstand scratching from keys, coins, rocks, and a box cutter, receiving no scratches on the display.
