Of course, the marching baritone and euphonium are used in marching and military bands. They are wrapped versions of the baritone and euphonium, designed to give that concert hall resonation even when in the marching field.

In orchestras Although the deficiencies of the ophicleide gave rise to both the euphonium and the tuba in the mid-nineteenth century, the tuba has long since been accepted as an orchestral instrument, while the euphonium never has been.

The three most common instruments in orchestras are the bass, the contrabass, and the euphonium. The tubas are of course the bass instrument of the brass section, but they are more than capable of playing melodies in the tenor register.

Euphonium. The euphonium is pitched in Bb, the same pitch as the baritone and tenor trombone. In America this instrument is called both a baritone or a euphonium. The written range of the euphonium is F# below middle C to C on the second ledger line, or possibly higher with an advanced player.

For the euphonium and tuba, however, music is written in the key of C, despite the instruments being in the key of B♭.

The baritone/euphonium has a wide range, and its sound is consistently rich and pleasing throughout. It is flexible in both tone quality and intonation. Therefore, it blends well with most any combination of instruments, but is most widely known for its place in concert, marching and brass bands.
