Methyl methacrylate (MMA) in liquid form is a substance regarded by FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors as “a poisonous and deleterious substance,” which is why it was made illegal for use in the end of the 90’s.

MMA is now banned in more than 30 states. Some nail salons, like those across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The sport is completely legal in the United States, South Africa and Singapore. While not illegal, it is not officially recognised as a sport in the Republic of Ireland, which does not mean MMA competitions are prohibited, but it has consequences on the legal status of MMA fighters as sportspeople in Ireland.

In 2003, a fighter named Peter Storm took advantage of the loophole in the law that banned professional MMA leagues but left amateur ones untouched. At twenty-five, Storm created the amateur Underground Combat League (UCL). Even though the UCL is perfectly legal, it is not sanctioned by anyone.

It can also be found in plastic. However, by the end of the 1970s, numerous complaints were filed to the FDA about the horrible effects of this powder to the skin and thus it became “somewhat” illegal.

Laws vary by state, but first of all there will typically be an assault charge. Because they are inherently dangerous, states put regulations around sports like boxing (and ultimate fighting). Organizing or participating in fighting events outside of these regulations is often a crime.
