Drew Brees is officially retired. The future Hall of Famer’s March 14 announcement went into effect Friday, per the league’s transaction wire. Brees retired after 20 seasons as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards and completions and second in passing touchdowns.

He’ll be out for at minimum three weeks. Source on Brees says the most optimistic recovery time would be 2-3 weeks. Emphasis on “optimistic.” Will depend on healing time, which varies by patient, and when they’re convinced he can take a hit without risk of serious re-injury.

The three fractured ribs on the left side are believed to have occurred in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. They did not show up as such on the X-ray performed at the time, possibly because of inflammation, but they were clearly seen on the CAT scan performed Monday.

The injuries With just less than nine minutes to play until halftime on Sunday, 49ers defensive end Kentavius Street pushed through rookie guard Cesar Ruiz to pummel Brees for what would have been a forceful sack, but the play ultimately resulted in a roughing-the-passer penalty.
