Dell dropped out the University of Texas in Austin in his very first year at the age of 19. While Michael Dell’s story is indeed extraordinary, he’s not the only tech billionaire to drop out of college and make it big.

In college, he started building computers and selling them directly to people, focusing on strong customer support and cheaper prices. Dell Computer was the world’s largest PC maker.

Later that year, Michael Dell took the company private. In 2015, Dell purchased data storage company EMC, a deal that still stands as the largest technology acquisition of all time. In 2018, Dell returned to the public markets as Dell Technologies.

To please his parents, Dell enrolled as a premed student at the University of Texas in 1983, but by then his only real interest was in computers. His parents were furious when he told them he wanted to drop out of college, so to appease them, Dell agreed to go back to school if the summer’s sales proved disappointing.

Dell Will Spin Off VMware, Unwind Part of Biggest Tech Deal. (Bloomberg) — Dell Technologies Inc. said it will spin off its stake in VMware Inc., creating two publicly traded companies and raising cash to pay down debt. Its shares jumped on the announcement.
