Chalk comes from limestone. Most of the chalk you can get today was made almost 50 to 100 million years ago. It is chemically made of calcium carbonate. The porous sedimentary rock naturally deep under the sea where small circular calcite plates called coccoliths accumulate to form limestone.

Chalk, soft, fine-grained, easily pulverized, white-to-grayish variety of limestone. Chalk is composed of the shells of such minute marine organisms as foraminifera, coccoliths, and rhabdoliths. The purest varieties contain up to 99 percent calcium carbonate in the form of the mineral calcite.

Chalk, in both its natural and man-made form, is white in colour and is considered to be a fairly soft solid. Naturally, It comes from the ground where it is found as a porous (can hold water) sedimentary rock. It is a form of limestone and is composed of the mineral calcite.

How Does Chalk Form? Chalk forms from a fine-grained marine sediment known as ooze. When foraminifera, marine algae, or other organisms living on the bottom or in the waters above die, their remains sink to the bottom and accumulate as ooze.

So chalk isn’t really harmful if it is inhaled in small to moderate amounts. In fact, you could eat a piece of chalk and it wouldn’t hurt you at all. But inhaling chalk dust and what accompanies it over a period of time is harmful. Take a close look at chalk and you will see something interesting and disturbing.

A: The craving for chalk is most likely related to iron deficiency. The general medical term for craving certain items is “pica.” With iron deficiency, you can have cravings other than chalk, including ice, paper, coffee grains and seeds.

If he is at all sick with this chalk ingestion, get him seen by your vet as soon as possible, the red is concerning, as this can indicate blood is present. If your pet is otherwise feeling fine, eating, drinking and urinating, try taking away all food, treats included, for 24 hours. He can still have water.

Luckily, pool chalk is not considered toxic to dogs.

In the case of Pica, ingesting things like rocks, chalk, fabric, sand, string and plastic can lead to gastric upset, vomiting, diarrhea and even worse—intestinal obstructions. The best way to prevent your dog from ingesting non-nutritive things like plastic, rocks and string is to limit their access to these objects.

Use sidewalk chalk to temporarily dye your dog’s fur! Get a piece of non-toxic sidewalk chalk in a color that will work well with the color of your dog’s fur. Put a few drops of water on the chalk shavings and rub the shavings with your finger to help them dissolve in the water.

Despite what is presumed to be a predominantly chemical formulation, deodorant is generally non-toxic to dogs that eat them and will most likely only result in a spot of vomiting and diarrhea.

Deodorants. “If a curious pet ingests a small amount of deodorant or if, for some reason, she has skin contact with the product and then licks it off, she may experience stomach upset,” she says. If your pet is vomiting, bring her to the veterinarian immediately.

So, the good news is that antiperspirants and deodorants are not considered toxic in dogs. The main concern is if the dog eats the plastic container as well, which Toby did not. So, that is great! When dogs eat antiperspirants/deodorants, they get gastrointestinal upsets with vomiting and or diarrhea as a result.

That’s right. It’s edible deodorant. But don’t throw out your Speed Stick just yet.
