Here, many former Chara habitats (H3140) have been polluted by either toxins or excessive amounts of nutrients (in particular phosphates and nitrogen), but a few large lakes and ponds remain. Chara is found growing in the very clean hard water lakes of Thy National Park like Nors Sø for example.

Most tap water should be fine for your houseplants unless it is softened because it has salts that can build up in the soil over time and eventually cause problems. Chlorinated water is also safe for most houseplants, but if you have a filtration system, that’s even better for your plants.

Over-watering can kill a plant more quickly than under-watering. Plants die when too much water in the soil causes the roots to suffocate and begin to rot. You may be able to save the plant if you notice the plant’s decline early enough to prevent pronounced rot and root death.

Sometimes, water pollution causes an explosion of new plant growth by providing necessary nutrients and food. Other times, it can harm or kill plants by changing growing conditions, such as by raising or lowering the environment’s acidity.

Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution. Known as a “universal solvent,” water is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid on earth. It’s the reason we have Kool-Aid and brilliant blue waterfalls. It’s also why water is so easily polluted.

The technique of growing plants without soil is called hydroponics. It’s simply growing plants in water. Hydroponics is not only useful.

To grow plants in water takes little prep!

1. Step 1 – Choose your plants. Plants that are suitable for indoor hydroponics sometimes can grow so fast that you will find a new leaf or bud almost every day!
2. Step 2 – Root It.
3. Step 3 – Water It.
4. Step 4 – Check In Yearly.

The two primary reasons plants need is air to photosynthesize (make food) and to breathe. Plants need to breathe for the same reason people and animals must breathe – they need oxygen to convert food into energy.

The heat cannot get out of the room, and so everything in the greenhouse gets hot. So plants inside a greenhouse can grow faster than plants outside because they are being cared for by humans in ways that we know makes them grow fast.

Air is vital to a plant’s growth and survival. Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and convert it into glucose through the process of photosynthesis, which is powered by sunlight. Without air, plants would not be able to create glucose and would die. They must have access to carbon dioxide to survive.

Aquatic plants get water and carbon dioxide from their aquatic environment and, like the land plants, light energy from the sun. Even though the plant is underwater, it still gets its energy from the sun because sunlight can pass through water.
