Nopales or nopalitos are the pads of the nopal cactus. People consume them as a dietary vegetable, and they regularly appear in restaurants, grocery stores, and farmers’ markets across the American Southwest and Mexico. Nopales are also edible when raw. When a person dices them, they resemble a green pepper.

The fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizenii) can be identified by its thick (2 foot diameter), barrel shaped body and long hooked spines. The yellow/red flowers and yellow fruit always grow at the top of the plant. Fishhook barrel cactus grow along desert washes and gravelly bajadas.

100 years old

From my observations, barrel cactus are all exceptionally great southwest native plants for gardens. They bloom wonderfully in spring and fall; some are exceptional with red spines that back light in front of a setting sun.

They can reach about 3 metres (10 feet) high and about 60 cm in diameter, and the stems generally have strong stiff spines and prominent ribs. The flowers, yellow to orange and purplish and sometimes fragrant, are up to 8 cm (3 inches) across. Spines in Ferocactus may be up to 10 cm (4 inches) long.

Barrel cactus, which is found mostly in the desert region of North America, has adapted wonderfully to the dry environment. The dense spines, which are designed to protect the plant from heat and animals, facilitate water retention by ensuring minimalistic loss of water in the dry environment.

Getting stuck by popular golden barrel cactus can actually hurt more. The cacti have been tested for thorn toxicity, but none exists. Still, the spines come encased in microscopic sheaths that often remain in the flesh after the spine is removed.

Mexico

Description. This barrel cactus is the largest of all of the genus Ferocactus; it reaches 4 m (12 feet) tall and may grow almost 1 m (3 feet) in diameter.

But in its native habitat in Mexico the golden barrel cactus has become one of the most critically endangered plants on the planet. Once numerous in the states of Querétaro and Hidalgo, most of its habitat has been inundated by the construction of a dam. Accordingly, the IUCN has listed it as endangered.
