Although Galland heard the tale from an Arabian storyteller, the Aladdin story is firmly set in China (so not the Middle East at all, but the Far East). The reason we think of the story as one of the true-born Arabian Nights is that many of the characters in the tale of Aladdin are Arabian Muslims with Arabic names.

However, by doing so, the donkey ended up doing ox’s work and in a way he saved his friend by putting himself in trouble. So the main idea behind this tale is, if you desire to help a friend, do so in a way that will not bring your friend’s burdens upon yourself.

The Arabian Nights is a story straight out of a romance novel. It’s an epic collection of Arabic folk tales written during the Islamic Golden Age. Scorned by an unfaithful wife, Shahryar is the king of a great empire, but is brokenhearted. Shahryar chose to marry a new woman every day only to kill her the next morning.

Sindbad the Sailor, Sindbad also spelled Sinbad, hero of The Thousand and One Nights who recounts his adventures on seven voyages.

Witnessing what was happening in her city, a well educated women named Shahrazad decides to marry King Shahrayar “ so that [she may] either succeed in saving the people or perish and die like the rest” (B414). Her father tries to convince her not to do it but he is unsuccessful.

Against her father’s wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to marry the king. Thus the king kept Scheherazade alive day by day, as he eagerly anticipated the conclusion of each previous night’s story. The original story of ‘Aladdin’ is, maybe surprisingly, set in China. In the earliest versions of the story, Aladdin is Chinese. He’s also not an orphaned street urchin but a lazy boy living at home with his mother. All the characters in the tale are also Chinese apart from the wicked magician who is from North Africa.

One Thousand and One Nights has an Indian-Persian core and Egyptian-Bagdad stories. The book begins with a Persian book of fairytales “Thousand Stories” that was translated into Arabic in the 9th century under the title “Thousand Nights”. Some new stories were added in the translation, and some of them were adapted to Islam.

Most scholars agreed that the Nights was a composite work and that the earliest tales in it came from India and Persia. At some time, probably in the early 8th century, these tales were translated into Arabic under the title Alf Layla, or ‘The Thousand Nights’.

The tales have influenced and continue to inspire many well-known literary figures. As Louis Borges commented: “To erect the palace of The Thousand and One Nights, it took generations of men, and those men are our benefactors, as we have inherited this inexhaustible book, this book capable of so much metamorphosis”.
