Subcultures are values and norms distinct from those of the majority and are held by a group within a wider society. A biker gang is an example of a subculture. Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin (1966) proposed that deviance results from the various opportunity structures that frame a person’s life.

Cohen seems to imply that the interest of the ruling class corresponds to the interest of the humanity and to the development of productive forces. In that sense, he is a Smithian Marxist, according to which rational self- interest behaviour would lead to economic development.

Central to Marx’s thought is his theory of historical materialism, which argued that human societies and their cultural institutions (like religion, law, morality, etc.) were the outgrowth of collective economic activity. Marx’s theory was heavily influenced by Hegel’s dialectical method.
