Quarks and electrons are the smallest things we know of and are called fundamental particles. Together, quarks and electrons combine to make atoms – the quarks combine to form the protons and neutrons. Quarks are always found with other quarks (such as inside a proton), but electrons can be on their own.

In a competing theory called loop quantum gravity, on the other hand, space and time are broken into discrete blocks, which gives rise to a smallest possible length (expressed in units of the Planck length, about 10 -35 meters), area and volume of space-time—the fundamental building blocks of our universe.

Their name comes from their “strangely” long lifetime. The origin of the charm quark name is because of a whim, I like to think it was because it made the mathematics in the theory work like a charm. In the past, some called the bottom quark – beauty, and the top quark – truth.

Protons and neutrons are made of quarks, but electrons aren’t. As far as we can tell, quarks and electrons are fundamental particles, not built out of anything smaller. You can’t have half a quark or one-third of an electron.

Well, since we are in the Chemistry section, electrons, protons, and neutrons are the smallest fundamental particles.
